Beautiful location. Definitely off the beaten hiking path. Large parking lot. It’s not super quiet because you will hear Route 80 traffic but is peaceful enough and you may just have the place to yourself.

Great trail for beginners and intermediate hikers. Well marked trails with easy parking.

Since moving to Morris County, I have been intrigued by the number of trails and parks that preserve and maintain historical landmarks. The thing that stands out at this site is that it’s the site of the former Richard Mine. You can clearly see cavities and deep crevasses in the grounding that once held mining shafts.

Be cautious of wildlife that include black bears off the red trail and the possibility of bow hunting taking place throughout the park system. The red trail is 1.5 mi long and the white trail is 0.5 mi long. There is a fairly sufficient sized gravel lot without space markings and the trails are well-marked.

I’ve been going hiking here with my dogs for years. What I love is I dont have to drive there, it’s just a could mile walk in the woods from my house through the woods. There is I believe 5 different trails with different types of terrain that go cover miles of our woods in Mt. Hope and Richard Mine, and they are all well marked so you dont get lost. It’s very clean as well, no one throws their garbage anywhere. It’s never to crowded either which I love so you can really just enjoy the beauty of the woods. Just a warning there are plenty of bears in our area and coyotes(coyotes you are going to see unless for some reason your hiking in the evening time which I dont reccomend) but I have run into a few bears for the most over black bears will just runaway from you, unless they have their babies around. So just make sure to take notice of not only your surroundings on the ground, but up in the trees as well. I’ve only had the problem of once running into a mommy bear who was up in the trees on the trails here about 6 yrs ago, which it was my fault I was in her territory. But even my pitbull knew it was time to run when she came flying down that tree. So be mindful of the signs around the trails that say “this is bear country” and “stay on the trails during hunting season”
