Beautifully redone..get a way spot. Our favorite part of Kansas the Flint Hills.
Matfield Station is a charming and unique place to stay in the middle of the Flint Hills. The bunkhouse is easy to find and get to, surrounded by natural beauty, and sits just along the train tracks. You can watch the trains go by several times a day–they don’t blow their horns so the sound isn’t disturbing, rather just a rumbling as the train passes by. If it bothers you–earplugs are provided–but we enjoyed this unique feature. The bunkhouse itself is comfortable, clean and nicely updated, while keeping the unusual features that make this such a wonderful place to stay–shelves with books about various natural interests, a map of the area, a hook placed by the door, little extras in the kitchen that provide just what you need to make a meal or morning coffee. The bed was comfortable, the living area very nicely done, and we welcomed a break from tv and outside distractions to just relax and getaway. There is also a patio with table and chairs to sit and watch the trains. I would recommend Matfield Station to anyone wanting an unusual weekend away!
My Wife and I spent our second Anniversary here. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. The sound of the trains going by at night took a little getting used to at first but we enjoyed them
I was visiting from Australia, and the hosts – a wonderful family – were welcoming in the best prairie tradition. Lovely comfortable Casita, a great night’s rest and a magnificent landscape to be part of. Bill is a sculptor with a fascinating oeuvre, some of which is on display right there! Well worth a visit!
Way more serene and beautiful than I thought. Trains pass very often but you get use to it quick. It’s part of the novelty. The Tallgrass Preserve is just a short drive away and it’s breathtaking.
