Its a super cool place. Fishing is 50/50 for bank fishing. We have caught some big catfish in the 7lbs range right off the banks. In the winter the snow geese come along with ducks, swans, cranes and owls come year round or when they migrate. The Bald Eagles are one of the biggest draw are the bald eagle nest, which looks like we now only have one active nest as one blew down 2023. There is one abandoned one that we hope to see them come back to or rebuild a new one. They are a sight to see during the winter when they are fishing on the ice. There indeed are other animals from a beaver, prairie dogs, large turtles and a whole host of other small animals.Trout does spawn up the creeks that flow in to the reserve. So thick that you only see fish. The bridges in these water ways can give you an indication as to how full the reserve is and how much fish might be in the shallows.its a super fun place with limited facility. The only sad thing is there is no camping nor swimming. So we have to resort to going to “other” lakes.
It’s free fishing weekend and the fish and games crew was putting on a knowledge training for the kids and boat safety. Plus a knot tie training.
Although I didn’t stop at this place I could tell from driving along side the park it had nice parking area for sight seeing and boat launches. Great lake viewing and wildflowers. I will definitely go back to explore for sure!
Plenty of bird activities going on. I was fortunate enough to see swarms of snow geese.
This place is lovely! Even in the Winter when a lot of it is closed there is still so much to see. When you come here it allows you to imagine how much wildlife there would have been in America if there weren’t quite so many people. We saw a dozen pheasants, some quail, to golden eagles and a bald Eagle. We also saw a myriad of smaller hawks and waterfowl that didn’t come close enough for us to identify them.
