If you’re searching for a scenic place to visit with your canine companion, Primitive Campground near Cottage Grove, Oregon offers a rustic getaway surrounded by nature. This dog-friendly campground features large sites, beautiful lake views, and direct access to pet-friendly hiking and walking trails. Many campers praise the tranquil setting, abundant blackberries for picking in season, and the mesmerizing starry skies visible at night due to minimal light pollution.
While this park provides a peaceful retreat, it’s important to note that amenities are simple and rustic. There are vault toilets, some running water stations, and plenty of open space for your dog to roam on-leash. Bring essentials for your pup, such as water bowls and waste bags, as on-site services may be limited. Shade is available at some sites, and the campground is well-suited for families who love hiking, relaxing by the lake, and enjoying a true Oregon outdoors experience. Check for any seasonal closures or restrictions before planning your visit.
Cottage Grove Lake Primative Campground is closed as of June 15th, 2025 due to “budget cuts”. Edit: Opening for now on Friday and Saturday nights only. No notice, not so much as a sign in explanation. This is typical behavior for our little Cottage Grove office, which closed the entire lake (for your safety) during covid and closed the entire Pine Meadow Campground for walking one winter for logging which did not happen until spring. These are not your public lands after all. They are theirs, and used as a cudgle against you.

My family loves this campground! We have such a pleasant time every time we stay here. There’s only a few sites with shade. It is primitive so they say there’s no running water and only bucket/vault toilets. They actually do have some running water in two areas. The bathrooms are to be expected from vault toilets. They don’t smell as bad as you would think but the flies are horrendous. They’re especially bad at night cause they attack all light sources. I found out the hard way not to wear a head lamp going to the bathroom at night. Lol If you leave the bathroom doors cracked the fly issue is 90% better. I feel like they should drop the price down to 10$ a night maybe 12$… overall it’s a beautiful diamond in the rough. The stars you see at night there are stunning.

Rangers never returned to help finish registration. Instead they ignored my waves. As I was leaving I was gonna use the campground shower. Since no parking permit ( the thing they said they would bring me), they stopped me from entering and tried to charge me more money (1person). I felt slighted and felt I was being treated as a lesser unwanted visitor. Only stay if you have no choice. And likely this campground will be the last one listed. Totally lazy for an Army Corps of Engineers campground. I will definitely stay is a rest area before returning here.

I love this campground. At night there is no light so you can see the milky way easily. The vault toilets are clean and not an outhouse smell. Choose your site correctly, some have shade, some not. At night it is so loud with the frogs and bugs serenading everyone – great white noise. The sites are very large and a lot of blackberries to eat. The generators are turned off at 10 pm but usually generators are on the non-primative side campground. The views are beautiful from the lake and hills surrounding it. There are motorboats on the lake. The swim area is currently closed. But, a great price at NULL/nt.

Very nice spot. LOTS of sweet Blackberries to eat/pick(watch out for the throns)! Staff are friendly & VERY helpful. Camping spots are nice. Went with primitive camping.( Note: they charge you NULL to take a shower). Nice lake for swimming/canoeing/boating. Primitive camp sites don’t have any lights in the bathroom or around the building of the bathroom. Staff check on you by driving by. Check out is at 11am.
