Easily my favorite trail at Mt Mitchell State Park! We did 2 miles or so of the Black Mountain Crest trail, also known as Deep Gap Trail. The smell of the forest, views, and lack of crowds are positives of this trail, to name a few!
Our views were slightly obstructed due to the Canadian fires, but you can still see the blue ridge mountain line. I would rate this Trail as moderate due it having a lot of steps, steepness, and some rock climbing.
Gorgeous hike at the top of mountain Mitchell with breathtaking views. Lots of rocks and inclines but worth it
Didn’t exactly do this one, but started the deep gap trail to celo knob and back(~17 miles, 9.5 hrs with stops). Was walking through clouds for the most part, cleared once where I can get some views of the black mountains. Also it had rained the night before, so the rocks were slick and trail was quite muddy. The ups and downs are no joke. Will definitely be back to do the full hike, and hopefully get better views🤞.
Beautiful section of the trail, this was probably my favorite. We actually did the Loop starting with the Balsam Mount Mitchell Trail to the Buncombe Horse Trail and then took the difficult hike up the Big Tom to finally connect to the BMC. We hiked to the summit of Big Tom then onto Mount Craig. The views are incredible. There are a couple of sections with large Boulder scrambling, rope climbing, steep steps and mud. The red raspberries were so sweet needless to say we had dinner!
