Great place to stop along the way during your run or bike through Duke Island.
The Duke Island Dam, also know as the Raritan Water Power Canal Headgate Dam, was originally constructed in 1840 to regulate the flow of water in the nearby canal that proved hydropower to downstream industries. The dam we see today is a replacement constructed in the 1950s. At that point the canal itself was no longer being used for hydropower but it was still used to supply clear water for the Duke Estate fountains. The slow flow of water down the canal would allow time for fine particles to settle out of the water compared with the water in the river itself. This continued until the 1970s. So this dam you see today, which continues to block the migration of fish up the river, exists so clear water could spray from some fountains.
Nice place to relax and enjoy the air. I want to come back when its less hot and more cool. But overall, a nice restful place. There are BBQ stations newr by where you can cook yourself a burger or whatever with fam or your partner. The park ranger was sooooo supportive and helped helping me find what i was looking for
