Great place to go tubing. Put in at Swopes Valley Trailhead and get out at Sand Siding Trailhead. Takes about 3.5 hours to float.

This trail has become one of our families favorite local destinations the past few years. The trailhead itself has recently gotten an actual bathroom, which was great, and an upgrade from the porta potty that was there last time we went. There isn’t any running water, but still great to just have that. This is the trailhead that gets the closest to the fossil pit. For my little explorer’s it’s the best way to spend an afternoon looking for fossils. It probably takes us maybe 10-15min to walk to the pit. We all enjoy digging around and finding fossils. We find anything from seashell fossils, small marine animals, and even some fish scales one time. My husband is determined on finding an ammonite, as others have been able to find some there as well. We have been able to find fossils all over the hill and even just laying around. A hammer and chisel makes it alot easier to find good fossils though. There isn’t much shade on the hill so make sure to bring sunscreen, and plenty to drink as it gets pretty hot in the summer exposed on the hill. Have fun!!

Parked at Swopes Valley Trailhead then rode my bike. About 1 mile in is the fossil site and at approximately 2.5 miles to Bordners cabin.

What could be better than finding some fossils with someone you love?! We never dug for fossil before, but it seemed like something fun to do on a cool autumn day. The “fossil pit” is about half a mile from the trailhead parking lot. It was a bit short for our hiking taste, but it was great as we had hammers and chisels in hand. We stayed until it started to rain. We didn’t see much wildlife while there, but the sound of raindrops on the dry autumn leaves was magical as we grabbed our finds and slowly packed up our stuff. Overall, we had a blast, digging and hammering. Even though we knew nothing about it, we had such fun talking and looking at each other’s finds. We didn’t find anything ground breaking, but we loved it anyway 😃
