This is an amazing waterfall in the heart of Blackwater Falls State Park! The hike is quite easy and short, it leads to a bridge which overlooks the waterfall. Said hike is right next to the Blackwater Falls State Park lodge. The scenery is also great other than the waterfall!

Short walk from the lodge to a wooden bridge atop the falls. Just beyond the bridge you can look back up toward the falls for a better view.

This trail was one of the most beautiful hikes in the fall. The colors in the ravine along with the waterfalls was a fantastic part of our 20 mile day around Spruce Knob

Short walk to the bridge to be on top of a waterfall.
There are a lot of roots throughout the path and when wet it does get muddy.

It’s a quick hike, but it is not paved.

In February 2021, after weeks of freezing weather, my wife and I spontaneously set out to explore frozen waterfalls and landed at Elakala Falls—and it was absolutely worth it. The falls, frozen in motion, surrounded by snow-covered trees and quiet trails, created a truly magical winter scene.

A word of caution: the main stairs can be extremely slippery and difficult to navigate when iced over. We found a safer alternative trail starting behind the parking lot, which I’d recommend during winter visits.

If you’re ever nearby after a snowfall, don’t miss the chance to see Elakala in its frozen glory—it’s a serene and breathtaking experience.

Short little hike down to the overlook of the fall. You kind of blaze your own path to make it down to the falls. Plethora of roots and rocks so just be mindful of your footing. Beautiful waterfall. Long exposure photo op for sure.
