Discover the scenic beauty of Old Loggers Path, a well-known pet-friendly trail near Canton, Pennsylvania. This 28-mile loop is a favorite among hikers and their four-legged companions, offering a moderately challenging route through woodlands, alongside clear streams, and past striking vistas such as Sharp Top and Rock Run. With several campsites, reliable water sources, and clear orange blazes guiding the way, it’s perfect for dog owners seeking a dog-friendly hiking adventure in the PA wilds.
Due to its remote and natural setting, Old Loggers Path provides a true wilderness experience. There is plenty of parking available at the main Masten CCC Camp Trailhead and other access points along Pleasant Stream Road. While the park is not a traditional fenced dog park, the extensive loop trail makes for a great off-leash hiking outing—just follow local leash guidelines and always clean up after your pet. Enjoy the peaceful campsites, refreshing stream crossings, and the chance to spot local wildlife alongside your furry friend.
Gorgeous trail with views, good campsites, numerous water sources. Easy trail for backpacking. Convenient loop with parking at several locations. Camping at Masten trailhead allows you to drive in late and tent right there for an early start on the trail. The length allows for doing the whole loop in one weekend.
Loved this trail, especially seeing Rock Run, which was so clear and refreshing in late August. Well blazed and good hiking. Trail maintenance could have been better with the blowdowns, but figured they were still getting caught up from Debby earlier this month. Did the entire loop CW in a weekend.
Started in Masten and went clockwise over 3 days 2 nights. Night one camped by pleasant stream and night 2 camped along Rock run which was an amazing site. There had been a lot of rain and i got caught in a bad thunderstorm the first day and when i crossed pleasant stream the water was above my knees and flowing rapidly. There were also many small stream crossings throughout the trail. There were a few downed trees that were blocking the trail and I had to go around. The highlights were the vistas, especially sharp top, and the campsites especially around rock run. Also saw several snakes around sullivan mountain which was really cool. Overall the trail was not too hard although there were a few steep climbs and descents. It was easy to follow with orange blazes and i also liked that there were arrows whenever there was a change in direction.
This is a well maintained, well marked hiking/backpacking trail. Lots of camp spots and 2 lean-tos make this a very popular place to spend 2-4 days in the woods. My trip clocked at 28.4 miles. There is plenty of parking at the main trailhead at Masten CCC camp, but there are at least 2 more access points to begin the trail. Information kiosks were up to date with regulations for camping, fires, hunting, and such. The lean-tos were both very nice/new with plenty of space inside and fire rings. Note that Sprout Point lean-to is a dry site – no water. However, water is pretty reliable all along the trail. I hiked it in May during a dry spring. Another note, no trash cans, so pack in, pack out, and no privies around the entire loop including at the lean-tos. This trail is a real beauty. Views, wildlife (watch for rattlesnakes), streams and waterfalls. A perfect 3 day trip.
Really nice loop. It was incredible well blazed. The trail need a bit of maintenance as there were numerous spots were I had to go pretty far off the path to get around a downed tree. Also many spots of the trail were very overgrown. I leaned to just trust the blazes as many parts of the trail did not look like a trail at all. Overall thus was a very enjoyable overnight, but and would recommend for most pepole looking for a moderate challenge.
