Dog Anxiety: Causes, Signs & What Actually Helps
Many dogs show clear signs of dog anxiety, including pacing, panting, and seeking constant reassurance. If your dog paces, whines, […]

Bluff Lake Reserve is a stunning natural area nestled off Mills Creek Road, just a short drive from Big Bear Lake, California. Known for its scenic meadows, peaceful lake, and ancient evergreen forests, this spot is ideal for dog owners seeking a serene, pet-friendly adventure away from the crowds. The reserve offers a unique experience with its lush landscapes, wildflowers—including rare local species—and opportunities to enjoy both hiking and nature with your dog.
Visitors can access the reserve via the Castle Rock Trail, a moderate to challenging hike that rewards you with breathtaking views and a tranquil setting. Dog owners will appreciate the wide, mostly level ground and the peaceful environment perfect for exploring on-leash with their pets. Historic cabins and remnants give Bluff Lake Reserve a rustic charm, and walking here offers a true getaway into nature for you and your furry friend.
This is such a beautiful place! it’s like a meadow and a lake all rolled into one. Green grass, blue skies, and white clouds!
I believe you used to be able to get here through an off road trial. Now, I believe the main way to get here is through the castle rock trail.
We saw quite a few woman hiking this trail, so I don’t believe it’s that dangerous up here, they must be locals. There is a private property at the other side of the lake and a cool cabin that I believe is part of a historic site.
Bluff Lake is beautiful and well worth the visit. Some remnants and old cabins remain.
While you can drive close with a 4-wheel drive vehicle, we opted to hike from the Castle Rock Trail to Bluff Lake. The hike is moderate to difficult, so I’d recommend bringing hiking sticks, snacks, and plenty of water. Depending on your pace, the roundtrip takes about 2 to 4 hours.
5 STARS, BUT BE CAREFUL! This is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited but do not do this the way I did. You can’t just click on directions and drive to this trail. The road is in very bad repair and you need an SUV or truck to get up. I did this drive in a sedan and white knuckled it the whole time at 2mph. The way google tells you to go, there is no parking. I just happened to find a cleared spot on the side of the road. Please plan ahead and make sure you can make it to the lake before you try to visit!
That being said, this is the most pristine, gorgeous place I’ve ever visited. Huge evergreens, large boulders, ferns, a lake in the mountains, endless birds, sunshine and huge meadows. This is a paradise and well worth visiting if you plan well. Some other commenters recommended a better way to reach this destination, lodgepoll something or other. Follow this advice!
Absolutely stunning and peaceful place to cam or hike ! far away from all the crowds of the big bear lake, either a 30 min drive or approx 1 hour hike to get there.
I’m so blessed to live near such a beautiful place, just a short drive from the lake and my neighborhood on Mill Creek road.
An easy hike on mostly level ground is this paradise in the forest. Nature at its finest, wild flowers some rare and unique to this area only.
