I needed a nice walk in nature after a long week. I ended up running for my life after looking to my left to see a 4 to 5 ft alligator about 3 ft from me along the walking trail. A short time later, I came across a raccoon walking down the middle of the trail towards me. I tried talking him down, but he just kept walking. I thought to myself – is today the day I get bit by a rabid raccoon? Lol He finally backed down after I started walking towards him because my only other option was to go back towards the gator. I then came across the lovely views of the treatment plant and the stench of garbage. After finding the map and finding the direction towards safety on the main trail, I then encountered a 15 ft gator not far away. I finally made it back to the main trail to find that the gate was locked, and my option was to climb over it or go back and take a walk with my feral friends. There were several people biking the main trail, and that’s probably fine, but I do not recommend walking the walking trails.

Amazing spot and wildlife. It’s smells for about 3 minutes before you get used to it. Calm and very fun. However BEWARE THE WILDLIFE, I walked with in 15ft of an at least 8ft alligator that was right off of the trail. There are also several smaller ones everywhere.Still a great adventure, just be very careful.

Nice quiet area bordering the larger Grassy Waters Preserve. Unfortunately a strong sewer stench pervaded the area this time. Rookery Trail is closed so the other trails are cut off from the Palmetto trailhead off 45th.
