The landscape was primarily designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of New York’s Central Park, from 1874 to 1892.Olmsted’s design deliberately uses curving walkways and lush tree groupings to contrast with the straight, formal lines of the building, intentionally framing sight lines to emphasize the Capitol Dome as the centerpiece.Key features include the Capitol Reflecting Pool (at the base of the west side), the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, the Peace Monument, and the U.S. Botanic Garden (the nation’s oldest). The Summerhouse, a small hexagonal brick shelter designed by Olmsted, provides a historic resting spot. The West Front Lawn is the traditional site for Presidential Inaugurations since 1981. The grounds also host many commemorative trees and continue to be managed by the Architect of the Capitol.
Beautiful building with lots of green space and gardens surrounding it. Felt a little eerie with the national guard around but there were still a good amount of tourists there. You can get up pretty close to it if you’re willing to walk more. The visitors center is tucked away behind it and kind of hard to find. Was closed due to the shutdown anyway though.
Mike was a great tour leader at the Capitol building this afternoon. He was informative and funny. The building itself was majestic and grand. The art, statues and introductory video were all amazingly done. The staff was organized and kept the crowds moving and reserving a time in advance really helped keep us on track with our daily schedule. It truly gave us a look into the past. Would recommend scheduling a tour of the Capitol building to anyone visiting.
Came here for the official Capitol tour. Worth every minute spent! Loved learning about our country’s rich history and seeing in person the places that have been sites for so many important moments in time (regardless of what side of the aisle you are on). They manage to give you a solid overview of history without delving into any of the recent divisive partisan politics and attacks on this building, which I loved. There is so much more to see and learn. A lot of places have tours in DC, but this one is one of the best ones!!! Staff is all very friendly and super helpful. Give the tour about 1.5 hours overall.NOTE: You will NOT be able to visit the beautiful rotunda without pre-reserving a tour. However, passes are complimentary, you just need to set it up in advance (I recommend at least 24 or 48 hours prior at minimum for more time slot options).When they give you the tour, you will get your own personal headset to hear the audio of the tour guide since there is a lot of movement and noise and people… but it’s a lovely advantage that I’ve never had before in a tour. Helps keep everyone in your group looped together (there are multiple groups roaming simultaneously).
