Great park with not too many people present on the weekends and a few shaded places to choose from. Most people I saw were either sunbathing/reading a book or sitting around chatting with friends. Highly recommend if you want a quiet day at the park!

September 2023

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. Read if you can.

September was a lovely month at the park as the evenings cooled down and each year I felt urgency to the summer ending and sometimes elusive slipped away one day and one person at a time.

Having lived right next to it on 23rd Street at M for many years, I now look back on it as a golden time. I went there several times daily with my weimaraner. It was my ritual for about a decade.

I rather miss the big development spike that brought me back there in the early 1990’s. It was a time of hope and renewal. I had returned to Foggy Bottom after growing up in the area from the end of the 50’s through the 70’s. The park was a relative constant as every adjoining street transformed from the end of the 70’s to the end of the 80’s. It was a time of growth and prosperity for many. Many others there died before their time, moved, or were sadly lost to time in short order.

In the spirit of fraternity I evoke many happy memories from a now-gone era from my youth. Much of what once was the news among the locals at the park seems irrelevant now. Although I would like to go back. chasing one’s past is ill-advised since it’s heading towards a fall, and risks ending alone in despair.

I believe that I fail to provide an objective review of the park. I speak to this matter only through a softened nostalgic personal perspective. I didn’t garner how important it would be to me later when looking back both 50 and 25 years ago.

A fair Proustian analysis of my review might be that my conception of the park is constructed by rich detailed memories of sensations, involving various interesting locals, our pets, and all manner of dialogue and colorful occurrences; sentimentally remembering and playing with time that is entirely past.

I liked this location a great deal. This is probably useless to the typical reader. But that’s all I’ve got.

Dog heaven. Nice for people too. A shady trail along Rock Creek leads all the way to M.

Nice park a bit hidden for tranquility from the city. A flowing creek as well. Only thing is that is not super clean. Some parts smell like sewage. And sometimes there are homeless.
