Neighborhood in the 50s and early 60s used to call this Park Raze Woods because Park service discriminated against us newcomers moving into the neighborhood by telling us no ball playing not displaying any signs of names like the other Parks. Later I found out why because it was a Fort where Black soldiers were located who protected the President. They took away the playground and at one time there were free concerts so there had to be outlets somewhere. A nice neighborhood friendly park for humans not for pets. Deer run freely there in the woods. I used to take my child there so it was a special place for me in the 70s. Still go there when Lance Reynolds plays for Rock Creek Conservancy in Summer.
I decided to take a walk through the park while scoping out the picnic pavilion. As I was visiting on a December afternoon, I didn’t get to experience the forested escape the park provides in the summer, but I can imagine it must be a nice haven for the neighborhood.
I love this park. It’s got trails through the woods in the middle that let out on every side of the park, gazebo, a big hill (sleddable in the winter btw), and a great view of the sunset. Known to be quiet during days of the week and poppin on the weekends. Just a gem of a park.
Nice park to walk in and explore. There is a woodsy area with trails that cross cross, and a picnic area with a few tables. Good for power walking, dog walking and exploring.These are the earthen ramparts left behind from the US 1861 Insurrection. Kansas Avenue was carved through during the 1930s, there is another small, cool part west of the main part on the other side of Kansas, check that part out too, cool trees. You can see this is the high ground. The military always takes the high ground parts.
