The North Shore Rail Trail is a popular pet-friendly destination in Wading River, New York, attracting dog owners, joggers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Known for its mostly flat, wide paths and scenic views, this trail runs through Suffolk County with stretches of gentle hills and well-maintained grass areas, making it ideal for an easy to moderate outing with your dog. The trail is especially accommodating for those enjoying dog-friendly hiking in Long Island, offering ample space for walking on-leash and relaxed socialization.
While the North Shore Rail Trail does not feature a traditional fenced dog park, it stands out for its accessibility and length, making it suitable for both short strolls and longer adventures. Visitors appreciate that the grass is cut regularly to help reduce ticks, enhancing the safety for pets. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid crowds and the midday heat. Please remember to clean up after your dog to keep this scenic trail enjoyable for everyone.
It’s one of the amazing trails in Suffolk County. Mostly flat with some inclines.
Awesome Trail for biking. Wide enough for two lanes of biking and the grass is cut on either side to cut down on ticks. Pretty scenic overall too
Great trail except for bike crossings…too many in short distances between…stutters an otherwise nice 20 mi round trip.
Met with some friends for a funraiser
Easy to moderate trail, shared by walkers, runners, dogs on leashes and bikers. You will see people on their electric scooters or electric bikes, even though they’re not supposed to. And none of the dog walkers I encountered were cleaning after their dogs! Other than that, long pretty strait with some minor hilly areas. Go early before many others and before the sun gets too hot
