Elk Bayou Park in Tulare, CA is a convenient and dog-friendly destination for families and pet owners looking to enjoy the outdoors. Known for its open spaces, picnic tables, barbecue grills, and shady oak trees, this park welcomes dogs and provides a nice spot to relax and take in some local history. The park is wheelchair accessible and features parking that accommodates accessibility needs. While it is not a dedicated dog park with fenced areas, leashed dogs are allowed throughout the park, making it a great stop for pet-friendly recreation.
This park stands out for its large play area, playground for children, picnic amenities, and lovely shaded spots under the oaks—ideal for family outings. However, be aware of the limited parking, occasional crowds, and the reported presence of ground squirrels and red ticks. The public restrooms may be out of service, so plan accordingly. The park’s historic charm and open layout make it a memorable spot for both locals and travelers with pets.
Nice to have this area to stop, especially as the rest area nearby was closed. Overall a nice open space, 4 stars only because it was a bit secluded so safety was a concern, picnic bench seemed to have red ticks as a warning to anyone stopping to have a meal, which I pointed out to family so we stood and ate, although bench had a very nice shade covering. Overall a nice spot and convenient stop except for the concerns noted above.
I didn’t have a good time there was an entire softball team there it it was rather crowded. The parking area is small, the recreation portion is big but seating area is limited unless you take your chairs.
it was actually a nice lil park, i love how its like a small piece of history back when this place used to be a whole lake Tulare, I love spots like that where you can almost take in and experience the natives who once called this place home! I’ll always feel and experience what this world was like any point along the current timeline we are all still apart of, my secret to life and how i honor 1 of the 3 lost heritages in my blood, you couldn’t tell anyone who you are unless it includes who you brought along the way! 👊
I would like to take my dogs there but the restrooms are never open. Makes no sense. At times I need access to a restroom. Lots of holes in the ground from ground squirrels.
Looks like the restrooms in this park have not been functional since 1992. Despite that, it’s still a lovely little park to visit, though there is lots of highway noise pollution and tons of oak that provide shade. Just a friendly reminder that there is a small home located nearby, so please be mindful not to wander into that area as it is private property and besides the fencing, there aren’t any signs outside of that to indicate otherwise.
