La Tuna Trailhead: Pet-Friendly Hiking in Sun Valley, California

La Tuna Trailhead in Sun Valley, CA, is a favorite spot for those seeking dog-friendly hiking and outdoor adventure. Known for its challenging climbs—especially the local favorite, “Cardiac Hill”—and stunning views, this trail offers both paved paths and dirt trails, giving you and your pet the choice between a moderate walk or a rigorous workout. The area is especially scenic at sunset and offers plenty of fresh air and nature for your dog to enjoy.

This pet-friendly trail is not a traditional dog park, meaning there are no fenced or designated off-leash areas, but leashed dogs are very welcome and frequent sights along the paths. While there isn’t a separate play area for small or large dogs, pups of all sizes enjoy sniffing the trails. Amenities include public restrooms and limited parking; be sure to plan ahead for busy times. While La Tuna Trailhead is perfect for hiking with your leashed dog, it’s best to bring your own water, dog waste bags, and any gear you might need, as canine-specific amenities are not provided on-site. This trail is a beautiful moderate hike. If you choose to take the hiking trail, I do suggest good comfy hiking boots, but there’s also an asphalt road where cyclists and walkers take, and for that, you can just use sneakers. The La Tuna Canyon trail has many splits once you get to the top so you can have a different adventure every time you visit. Parking is limited, so keep that in mind. Also, there are no restrooms, make sure you do your thing before.

I have been meaning to come to this park for a while, and I definitely need to go back. Stayed just long enough to catch a magnificent sunset, pass a few dogs with my little guy, and get some elevation gain. Much of that I saw was paved, which is nice for those who want a solid path with grip at a slightly more agreeable ascension. There is a dirt road adjacent to the road that I used which is a bit more steep for those who like a bit more vertical speed. My dog also appreciated all the smells in the brush.

This is one of the most amazing hiking trails I’ve ever been to. I gotta warn you about a few things. Parking is limited, there are no services, and it starts easy but early on you’ll have your first challenge of cardiovascular health. Do not give up at the first hill, if you can make this one the rest will be just fine. The first few time i went there I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack; thus, I’ve named it Cardiac Hill. It gets very hot in the summer so make sure you’re wearing light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and bring plenty of water. Distance to the top is close to 4 miles. The view makes it all worth it. try it!

Been coming to hike at La Tuna for years now and don’t plan on stopping. Spectacular views. Steep hills with loose dirt provide a nice workout

Tip #1: for more of a challenge take the dirt trails to the top

Tip #2: take a minute at the very top to sit, meditate, and vibe with nature
