Summit Field is a spacious, tranquil destination for dog owners and families nestled near the summit of the Watchung Mountains within the South Mountain Reservation. This dog park in South Orange Village, New Jersey offers around 7 acres of partially shaded, irregularly-shaped open space, perfect for pet-friendly activities. The area is celebrated for its well-maintained grounds, making it ideal for jogs, walks, and dog-friendly hiking while providing a serene escape from suburban life.
In addition to scenic trails and wooded areas that welcome pets, Summit Field offers amenities such as massive old picnic tables, grills, a small picnic pavilion, and porta potties. While some facilities may show signs of wear, the park’s peaceful setting, towering shade trees, and nearby playground make it a family favorite for outdoor gatherings. Parking is limited, so arrive early, especially on weekends, to ensure a spot.

South Mountain reservation is like an oasis in the middle of suburbia. Summit Field is predictably located near the summit of the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains. The field is partially shaded and about 7 acres or so with an irregular shape that extends into adjacent picnic areas. There is a small picnic pavilion, porta potties, and numerous massive old picnic tables & grills which are, unfortunately, in various states of disrepair. The grounds are otherwise pretty well maintained and tucked far enough back in the reservation to provide a very tranquil setting. Parking is somewhat limited so be sure to arrive early if you plan to visit on weekends.
Excellent place for a jog. Walk or camping. Dog friendly and doggy playground nearby.
