Discover a unique and deeply meaningful dog-friendly destination at the Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon. While not a traditional dog park with off-leash areas and fenced play zones, this serene memorial honors the courage and loyalty of military, law enforcement, and working dogs. Take a peaceful stroll among the headstones and memorials dedicated to K-9 heroes, search and rescue dogs, and police units from Michigan and beyond. The site is wheelchair accessible and has onsite parking for visitors’ convenience.
Set in a tranquil location easily accessible from Milford Road, the memorial is a reflective place for dog owners and animal lovers to pay tribute to heroic canines. Visitors often comment on the beautiful landscaping and the inspiring stories behind each memorial. Friendly volunteers help maintain the site, and donations are appreciated but not required. While there are no designated off-leash areas or dog runs, dogs on leashes are welcome to accompany you as you explore this powerful tribute.
As a retired military K-9 handler/trainer, I’ve seen quite a few K-9 memorials and this place is the best one I have seen! It was honor to make the 3 hour drive to finally witness this masterpiece. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you to all of those who help built and maintain this memorial!
Saw the sign for the Michigan War Dog Memorial while driving on Milford Road and 11 mile. Stopped. What a Surprise! See headstones and memorials that “honor the courage and loyalty of K-9 dogs who fought with their handlers”, 911 search and rescue dogs, Vietnam Memorial Wall War Dogs, Oakland Co. Sheriff’s office K-9 unit, and other memorials representing K-9 and working dogs. We happened to meet a Volunteer while visiting (Thank you for your time and Service). This Michigan War Dog Memorial is not only informative but emotional. Donations appreciated, however, not required. Parking lot available.
Very cool memorial for some of our most important but often forgotten team members. Whether serving multiple tours in Afghanistan as explosive detection, on a Seal team, search and rescue or as a valued member of Police at all levels from small town to federal agencies, there is a memorial there for them. Even some from International agencies as well. A real eye opener when you see the Vietnam “Wall”. Go home and hug your dog.
This sacred place is more than touching. As a dog trainer I cannot express how much it means that these amazing, brave dogs are honored in this way.
If you love dogs, make the trip to the Michigan War Dog Memorial. You won’t regret it!
A fitting tribute to the stories of these heroic animals. The memorial is beautiful and I love that the former “lost” pet cemetery has been transformed into this place.
