The Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park Trail offers dog owners and their furry companions a picturesque, historic, and pet-friendly hiking adventure in South Bound Brook, New Jersey. Famous for its flat, well-maintained paths stretching for miles, this trail is perfect for families, runners, cyclists, and especially those looking for a scenic place to walk their dogs. Enjoy beautiful water views as you stroll between two rivers and take in local history via markers and sites like the Battle of Bound Brook and the Abraham Staats House.
Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the trail, making it a great choice for those seeking a relaxing or energetic day in nature. The trail is generally shaded, well-separated from road traffic, and features easy access from multiple parking spots (though parking can be limited at some entrances). While there are no fenced or off-leash dog areas, the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty make it one of New Jersey’s go-to spots for dog-friendly hiking and walking.
We like this trail because it’s flat and good enough for all ages. My 6 year old and 12 year old hike with us and we have been doing it for years… great for kids ..
Hike with historical markers. Rough walking trails. Saw some bicycles, please share the road and announce yourself. No comfort stations, no tables or benches. Dogs on leash.
Nice path with some shade. There’s a footbridge crossing the canal that looks like it’s built on an old swing bridge.
