The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, is a scenic destination for outdoor enthusiasts and dog owners alike. This long, flat towpath stretches alongside the tranquil Raritan River, offering miles of pet-friendly trails surrounded by natural beauty, historic canal remnants, and an abundance of wildlife. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll or an energetic hike, this trail provides a serene escape just steps from town.
Dog owners will appreciate the easy, level grounds ideal for leisurely walks or more vigorous outings with their pets. Though there isn’t a dedicated fenced dog area, the park is a favorite for its access to the river—where you and your pup can enjoy a dip on a hot day—as well as its walking, biking, and even horseback riding routes. The park operates on a carry-in, carry-out trash policy to help preserve its pristine environment, and benches are limited, so come prepared for longer strolls around this historic, dog-friendly hiking destination in Somerset County.
My man and I love it here. We live close by so we are out here a lot. Very nice long tow trail/path to walk through, but the best is the Raritan River. It’s fun to take a dip in when it’s hot. We also go tubing on the river as well. Def recommend!

A peaceful walking trail between the canal and Raritan River. I like to listen to the occasional freight trains, and have even seen an Eagle.

Easy flat walk along canal and river. Scenery the same didn’t vary. Shared with bicycles so need to be alert. Could have used a couple benches saw only 1. Lots of poison ivy.

Thank goodness this trail is preserved and taken care of. Bc when it rains, trees are downed on the path, water flooding from canal to river, and other bad natural weather disasters. It is a beautiful trail that spans for miles. Great for a day walk from a lock to a lock (water locks that control the flow of water), beautiful wild life and great environment and atmosphere on a sunny day. Walking, biking, and horseback riding is acceptable. Its a carry in and carry out trash. Fishing allowed as well but not recommended to eat from canal due to chemicals they pour into it every year to treat the water.
