Burnt Mills East Special Park, located at 10701 Columbia Pike in Silver Spring, Maryland, is a must-visit for outdoor-loving dog owners. This natural retreat offers pet-friendly trails with moderate hiking, scenic river views, and plenty of unique rock formations. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing walk with your pup or an adventurous hike, this dog-friendly park has trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Families and dog owners alike enjoy the easy access, ample parking, and hidden beauty—just minutes from the bustle of the city.
What makes Burnt Mills East stand out are its natural amenities: water access along the river (dogs can splash in despite posted signs about swimming), rugged paths for exercise, and lots of photo-worthy spots among rocks and streams. While there isn’t a designated off-leash dog area, the park’s trails are popular with leashed pets and their owners. Visitors appreciate the clean, well-maintained grounds and the peaceful environment for both humans and their furry companions.
Very interesting place! I could not have imagined that this would be right behind a shopping plaza. It seems similar to rock creek park. Moderate hiking and it’s not a very manicured trail from what I saw and is more rugged. I wil come back with better gear! 🥾
Just Stunning! This park is an absolute must visit. The walking meditation was surreal. Park is clean and maintained well.
There is parking available on both sides of route 29. While there are 2 ways to go from the main entrance, you can get to the river either way you go. Choosing the path to the left goes up along the river bank and allows you to bypass some of the more extra rugged trail you encounter to the right, and you come out farther along the river. At that point the trail is wider and easier to navigate. But both directions are totally awesome, and if you have time try both. There are plenty of climbable rocks and stepping stones to get great pictures along the stream, but be extra careful as the sand and mud can make some stones slippery. I recommend hiking shoes. Noticed some people allowing their dogs to go in the river, just remember, it says no swimming for a reason. Be cautious.
Gorgeous park. My pup and I had a great time, and I enjoyed picking rocks in the creek. The only thing I’d say this park could benefit from would be more signage, especially those leading back to the parking lot.
Great place to hike. Tons of places to get in the water. If you get to the highway then turn back it’s only about 2 and half miles. Moderate hike some rocks so small children be warned. It was a fun hike with plenty of dogs and folks.
Great location for families. It is not too complicated and easy to access. Decent amount of parking and nice hidden natural features great for sight seeing. We loved our trip. 👌 😎.
