Tremper Mountain Trail is a popular dog-friendly hiking destination located in Shandaken, New York. Known for its challenging 6-mile round trip hike and a rewarding fire tower vista at the summit, this trail offers a scenic adventure for both people and their pups. The well-marked path ascends roughly 2,000 feet, weaving through beautiful forested landscapes and rocky sections, making it ideal for active dogs and hikers seeking a more strenuous outing.
The dog-friendly hike provides opportunities to experience shallow streams, wildlife, and forest views. While there aren’t typical dog park amenities such as fenced dog runs or provided waste bags, there is parking available and a lean-to shelter near the top for rest. Visitors should be prepared for muddy and rocky conditions and bring their own supplies for their pets. The trail is generally open year-round, with winter maintenance making the parking lot accessible even during snowy months.
Moderate-hard trail that is all uphill. Rocky trail so have pretty good shoes . The scenery is nice but not that varied. Worth it once you get to the top and climb up the fire tower.

Rocky hike up up up. Beautiful forest. Only downside is there is A lot of broken glass around the fire tower. Thank you for breaking glass where my dog walks

Great hike! Parking lot is plowed very well and pretty early in the day. The shallow streams remain unfrozen a long time into winter despite low temperatures. View from the tower is great! There is a lean-to near the top and a spring on the way up. Round trip this trail was a little over 6 miles. It’s a climb, but the switchbacks make it feel like a gentle incline. Not a lot of views until the tower.

Beautiful hike. We hiked in early December, so it was slightly chilly at the top, but it was worth it. We hiked through mud, rocks, a few icy spots and finally to the top. The hike is on the strenuous side with scrambling and 6mile loop, but it’s worth it. The view from the watchtower was great, would come back in the fall.
