Scotland Park is a favorite place of mine. I remember back when Ma used to take Billy Joe and I down to play ball every summer as kids. Of course, Billy would always throw the ball over the fence and would have to climb over and get it, darn that arm of his. We used to get all the neighborhood kids out to play: Virginia (“Ginny”) and Allan (“Sharp Shootin’ Al”), but we would never have enough to play a full ball game. Now that I’m grown, I take my own kids, Johnny and Bobbie Sue, down there every weekend. Ah, the memories I made there. Heavens to Betsy, I remember Old Man Baxter would come down shoutin’ his socks off (of course back then, he wasn’t an “old man”, but we kiddos couldn’t tell the difference). Scared us straight it did, and I’m glad my kids can have the same experience. Baxter comes down there every other weekend shoutin’ some sorta nonsense at ‘em. Scared ‘em to pieces, but they’ll laugh about it when they’re grown. Of course, he’s no threat, Mama Jelly Bean will come wrangle him down if he gets too riled up because he forgot to take his meds. If you choose to visit Scotland Park, I swear on Ma, Pa, the chickens, and the cows, you won’t regret it.
