Did not stay here but came through the area with a tour group. We were told that people could stay here (for a price) and we realized that that there is not much else to do here beyond what this place offers.

What an extraordinary place to visit. I went for a friend’s wedding. I have never experienced such a place. So remote, peaceful and fun when you have your friends. This is not a place to come on your own as you will go bonkers. In the warm months bring plenty of bug spray. There is a short walk to the beach which is breathtaking. Each room in the mansion is unique and entertaining, we loved the bowling alley in the basement, knock’em down & set them up yourself. I remember the visit like it was yesterday.

Historic and charming. Kitchen staff are warm and welcoming. Recently under new management and they are doing a great job. This place is so special and full of small adventures. Meet the locals. They are nice folks. Go on the tours. Kayak to Blackbeard Island. Go to the beach at sunrise and sundown. Look up at the stars at night. Eat at Lulu’s Kitchen

We wanted to have our wedding here but, logistically, it wouldn’t work. So we came back for my wife’s bday a few years later with a bunch of friends. Totally an amazing place to stay. Some of the strangest rooms in this old mansion but that is part of why it’s so unique and fun. The basement is a blast, the circus room is so funny, I love it.Yes, the place is a bit rundown, needs some touching up. But again, its part of its character. The staff here is incredibly friendly and absolutely fun. Everyone cares about the mansion and the visitors equally and it shows.Honestly, the pricing (per person) for what you get when you book this place is pretty great. We got included meals (3 per day, per person) and all of them were really excellent, ESPECIALLY the dinners. Oh man, I could eat that stuff all the time.Breakfasts were a self-serve deal and that was perfect. Lunches were typically a sandwich buffet of sorts. Perfect for hot beach weather to take a break from the sun for a bit. There is much to do and see on the island overall. We put in about 45 miles on the bikes during our stay. Its quiet, and perfect. Expect bugs when you go (because ya know, GA coastline).Three downsides – 1st, The pool. It was closed and empty. Our friends and us typically spend a lot of time around water in vacations and we might have reconsidered if we had know far ahead of time that it wouldnt be able to be filled. But thats life. Luckily the beach is like a 5 minute bike ride away!2nd is that one of the 2 golf carts that come with booking the mansion wasn’t running. Not a huge deal since I like bike (lol), but that combined with no pool is the only reason Im giving 4 stars.3rd and final issue: The bikes. For the most part, the ones that worked were fine. Problem is that 4 full size bikes had rusted chains that caused them to pop off. 1 bike had a broken pedal. And 3 of the bikes are child sized. One bike had nearly flat tires too. It reduced the amount of usable bikes down to 11. With 17 people, that was an issue.Overall, loved it. Had fun. Will come back someday. Hopefully the pool works again! I say again that the entire staff there is a delight. Literally everyone we encountered in the mansion, on the grounds, and on the island were as pleasant as could be!

Sapelo Island isn’t exactly a state park, but some of its facilities (mainland visitor center, primitive group campground, and the Reynolds Mansion) are run by the GA Dept. of Natural Resources. What I didn’t realize when we drove up there Monday was that this island is hard to get to. The island isn’t a tourist destination, it is a research location for UGA’s Marine Institute. You don’t just jump on the ferry and go there – you have to have someone on the island host you or you have to reserve a spot on the small, limited DNR tours that run a couple times a week.Thankfully, a kind fella who works on the isle offered to host us and get us on.
