My family and friends camp each year in Allegany State Park. We are the psych ward group. my grandparents started going there when they were in their young 30s and my mother has been going and father have been going their whole lives in their 80 and 78. I’ve started going when I was three months old and have been going every year ever since it’s a great time our families and friends I’ll get together sometimes there’s 50 of us sometimes there’s 120 of us. Sometimes there’s only 20 but we all get together there every year and it’s a blast love going to the beach love hiking love going down and playing basketball and volleyball. We stay in Quaker side but we do go to red House to do kayaking and fishing. It’s a beautiful park and I love it there..
Allegany has so many great views and things to do. We kind of underutilize the park just by driving through around dusk to see what animals cone out and typically catch the sunset. Definitely a GREAT place to visit!
We only went to the quaker area by the lake. We camped for 2 nights (diehl campsites). The lake was nice and warm, the beach was clean. The tent site was nice, I love the bear box that is at every site. No need to worry about where you can leave your food and garbage. I didn’t see any bears while there though. They must treat for mosquitos cause they were a non issue. It rained and was quite muddy everywhere but this has been an unusually wet spring. We were right by a creek that was perfect to dip your toes in. There is a playground by the lake and one close to our site. The bathrooms right by our site were ok. Nothing fancy. I did see some fancier/newer looking bathroom facilities but didn’t go in them since they were not close. We hiked the black snake mountain trail with a large group that included children and adults. It was an easy hike (2100ft elevation) but the trail up was covered with nettles and the last 1/4 mile was very, very muddy. Wear pants and boots for the mud! There is a general store there, but as expected, is very expensive. NULL for a small pile of wood and like 7 bucks for 1 pack of Oscar Meyer hotdogs. I didn’t go in the store so I can’t attest to what they have.
This park is so big you could hike for days and still not see it all. Absolutely gorgeous. Im definitely going back to hike more! Oh and the only cell service was by the main road and my t mobile worked better than the verizon that my friends had and I hotspotted them so they could have better service.
I’ve been going to Allegheny for 30 years . It’s my happy place. It’ll never get old . Thunder rocks , creek walking , fishing , spotting at night for animals , night walks and campfires are my favorite things to do . Best campsites are Macintosh and bee Hunter.
Absolutely stunning area! so much wildlife! My hubby saw 18 deer, a small black bear, and an osprey catching a fish; plus we saw raccoons, chipmunks, skunks, a snake, and a whole lot of birds 🙂 so amazing! The campsites are nice, if a little small and uneven. Its quite hilly, but thats to be expected in a mountain area. The beach is beautiful, although the lifeguards are a little stringent on rules (no swimming outside the bouys, no jumping off parents’ shoulders/being thrown, no swimming except during lifeguard hours, etc). The bathrooms could do with being cleaned a little more often, especially since the one only had one working stall besides the one in the accessible shower room. Hubby and BIL went mountain biking and loved it. We came across from Canada for the scenery and were not disappointed! We will definitely be coming back!!
*the nearest town of Salamenca is pretty trashy, with almost all the stores being either gambling, alcohal, or weed. I’d suggest going to one of the towns slightly farther away if you’re looking for anything else.
