On a cool, breezy and perfectly clear afternoon, I drove over to the Wildcat Ridge parking lot at the end of Upper Hibernia Road in Rockaway Township with my dog, to make the ascent up to the peak of Wildcat Ridge. We got there via the Boonton Avenue to Split Rock Road route. I had no Idea that more than half of Split Rock road was unpaved, so I took my time driving over the gravel and potholes, kicking up a dust storm behind us. The orange Fly Way Spur trail was fairly easy to follow even though many of the orange trail blazes were pretty faded, and some were nearly 150-200 feet apart. Luckily the trail was well worn and easy to follow. Trail was composed of many gradual ups and downs, and it wasn’t too rocky. I don’t think my heart rate climbed very high even once. The trail leads to the Hawkwatch overlook; a very large rock ledge that allows for an excellent view of the Rockaway Valley and Boonton Township below. We then walked over to the ridges high point that has a radio station tower on top of it. After taking a few pictures at the summit, I decided to take the radio tower service road back to the car. It was a nice easy hike on a gorgeous fall afternoon.

An absolutely spectacular view that can be enjoyed anytime of year. We hiked out in early spring but the trees are cleared from the cliff top so even in summer the views will be fantastic. From here you can see as far as the New York City skyline.

The hike to here is not difficult but it is uphill. The final overlook is 1037 feet in elevation but the parking area is in the mid 900s. The trail is a rough gravel and stone road. Near the top you’ll see a sign and the orange trail forking to the right while the road continues to the left. From here it’s only a few hundred yards to the overlook.

There’s a large flat rock so great for sitting and enjoying the view or stopping to have a bite to eat. Information posters help you identify what birds you may see soaring by.
