Roan Mountain is such a beautiful park and has a nice visitor center staffed with friendly people right alongside the Doe River. The Peg Leg Mine Loop is located just outside the visitor center with a detour down to the old mine entrance. It’s an easy, relatively short, and fun hike. The Blue 2 Trail is a longer and more moderate trail that features a narrow mountain and lower meadow-like path. Enjoyed our visit and looking forward to coming back.
Beautiful park. Great visitors center. The young lady who was working was very helpful and knowledgeable about the trails. If you go to the top of the mountain, near the North Carolina line, the parking is limited inside. During the government shutdown check to see what services are available before you go.
We camped here before hurricane Helene, in the upper campground. The upper campground is older, situated on a steep hill, and has generally smaller spaces. We arrived at night, in the rain, and had to back up into a 90° spot going uphill. The road is really tight, and it was super tricky.Once we got settled though, we loved it!Clean bathrooms, water and electric hookups. Super quiet and beautiful park.Be sure to visit the farm on the park property.
My favorite park in all of TN. It’s always very clean. The views are gorgeous and the amenities are always clean. The camping area was also clean and perfect. Easy to navigate. Handicap accessible trails and camping. The hiking trails are some of the best around!
We’ve hiked & backpacked in the Roan Highlands for years but never stayed at the campground. It was great! Our campsite backed to the river and our kids played in it all weekend. Beautiful area, great campground. We didn’t realize there are also cabins for rent in
We started a three-week camping tour at Roan Mountain. We wanted to return to the area and get back on the Appalachian Trail, where we passed through on our hike of the AT in 2021. We got super lucky and got Campsite 14 pretty last minute. With the upper campground still closed with damage from Helene, it was a miracle to find it, but we’re so thankful it opened up! It was on the little creek, we had deer pass through the site, it was shaded — just really nice. The folks at the park were really great. It was only 15 minutes to Carver’s Gap and we went and hiked to Cloudland (where we camped in March of 2021) and then hiked up to Round Bald. We had to get off that day for thunderstorms but went back the next day and hiked to Grassy Ridge Bald. It was socked in, but still beautiful. We also hiked up to Raven Rock, and that was a great hike. We’ll come back soon and spend more time. There’s a few more trails still damaged/closed from that awful storm, but everyone is working hard to get them open. Also, even for July, being at altitude, the weather was divine!!We had water and electric, no sewer, but dump station right there. Laundry on site and they will exchange your bills for quarters in the store/gift shop!
Hiking the Appalachian Trail and it joins this short hike. Very beautiful pastures and nice place for sunset. Be sure to check out Rabbit Hole Hostel down the road if you need a place to stay! NULL gets you a bunk with mattress and a shower. They have Netflix in the bunkhouse and delicious milkshakes for NULL. Nice tentsites also available for NULL.
