Scenic gravel and paved drive with a peaceful atmosphere, though not much to explore beyond the route itself. I didn’t spot any bison during my visit, but I did see a few elk somehow.

Beautiful area that is well maintained and easy to drive through, although be warned, it’s gravel to get to the bison. Visitor’s Center was closed for repairs but plenty of bathrooms (outhouse style) near walking trails . The bison were so fun to watch! Plus, the babies are there! The poor car in front of us got mobbed. They were licking and rubbing on their car so be warned. Get out and enjoy nature! 🦬

Featuring hiking and biking trails, bison, elk, and plenty of calming nature wilderness, the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is a great getaway just a half-hour from Ankeny. Paved and some gravel roads. Building is closed due to recent flooding. Trails range from a mile-long to 4.5 miles, and there is a five-mile auto trail. Enjoyed seeing the bison roam!
