Discover the breathtaking dog-friendly Powderhorn Lakes Trail located near Powderhorn, Colorado. This high-elevation area offers pet owners and outdoor enthusiasts stunning views, expansive alpine tundra landscapes, and peaceful wilderness that’s perfect for adventurous hikes with your dog. The area is famously scenic, rolling at elevations over 10,000 feet, with lakes, wildflower meadows, and vistas of the San Juan, Elk, and Sawatch ranges. Trail access is plentiful, with about 45 miles of paths winding through forests and alpine terrain – a great fit for those seeking off-the-beaten-path, pet-friendly hiking.
Unlike traditional fenced dog parks, Powderhorn Lakes Trail is an open wilderness experience. It is best for experienced hikers and dogs who are well-mannered on trails. There are no developed dog park amenities like fences, double gates, or separated areas for different dog sizes; instead, you and your pup can find true solitude, clear mountain air, and natural beauty. Bring your own supplies, including water, waste bags, and snacks, as the area is very remote and pack-out rules apply. The location is ideal for exploring with your dog away from crowds and for those comfortable with rugged terrain and minimal cell coverage.
Bring your “A” game cause this is a rough one, especially with a pack. Well worth the haul for the amazing views though.
