The Preserve at Vassar – Dog-Friendly Hiking in Poughkeepsie, NY

The Preserve at Vassar is a spacious natural area in Poughkeepsie, New York, renowned for its dog-friendly trails, shaded woodlands, scenic fields, and wildlife-filled ponds, making it a perfect spot for pet owners seeking an outdoor escape. With well-maintained paths leading hikers and their dogs past beaver ponds, rolling countryside, dense woods, bridges, and sunny meadows, it has become one of the best dog walking locales in the Hudson Valley area.

Visitors appreciate the variety of hiking trails, many of which are shaded and offer stunning views of local flora and fauna—keep an eye out for turtles, birds, and wildflowers along your journey. While not a traditional dog park with fenced play areas, The Preserve welcomes leashed dogs and is a favorite for those looking for dog-friendly hiking and nature walks. Note, however, that the terrain can be muddy and hilly in spots, and there are exposed roots and occasional boardwalks to navigate.

Anne Hathaway did not spit in my food.

I enjoyed an afternoon here as I did once back in the 2010s. Relatively easy trails, but some roots & unstable boards. There will be mud!

I’m a student at Vassar College and I go here as often as I can, usually every two weeks or so when the weather’s nice. It’s often muddy and has lots of hills but it’s a gorgeous hike and I’ve seen a lot of cool animals around.

Great place to take a walk. Parking can be limited at times, but you can choose to walk on their regular path, bike , or even take a walk through the woods. They have it laid out so you can see the difficulty in the trails. Harder trails are labeled, pay attention if you struggle with going down hills or walking around exposed tree routes. Best part is seeing all the turtles in the pond!
