Nestled in Paramus, New Jersey, the Dunkerhook Area of Saddle River Park offers a scenic escape for dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts. This pet-friendly park features miles of paved and wooded trails alongside the tranquil Saddle River, perfect for dog-friendly hiking, running, or leisurely strolls. With ample shade provided by towering oaks and a peaceful ambiance enhanced by a nearby waterfall, the park is an inviting spot for locals and visitors alike seeking fresh air and green space close to home.
Saddle River Park-Dunkerhook Area boasts abundant amenities, including a spacious picnic area, a playground for kids, benches throughout the trails, restrooms near the parking areas, and plenty of parking—especially on weekdays. While not a dedicated off-leash dog park, it’s a wonderful spot for on-leash rambles, making it one of the most dog-friendly parks in Paramus for enjoying the outdoors with your canine companion.
Lovely park with good trails for running and doing some bicycle. Not so good if you are looking for isolation in the nature and silence, you still hera noise and some parts aren’t well taken care of. Overall, if you are a local is a good place to take a small break and breath somewhat fresh air.
This is what we have in DunkerHook area of Saddle River County park.
1. A huge picnic area with a very good play area and swings for young kids.
2. A bike and walk path parallel to the two different water streams. Be careful to walk on the left side. So bicyclers can pass by easily.
3. Benches at short distance alongside the walk path. So elders can seat and relax but youngsters can continue walking and meet them back on return path.
4. A small waterfall that makes a good relaxing waterfall sound if you seat on one of the close by benches.
5. Park has different areas. Some really small areas like Area C to park 10 cars and have your own picnic right across.
6. Parking is enough on a given day but it may get busier over the weekend.
Enjoy!!
Quite an enjoyable park with several paved pathways to walk along the river. It gets plenty of use from people in the neighborhood as well as people coming here as a destination. Restrooms are available near the parking areas and some smaller trails go into the woods.
The red hiking trail isn’t marked or maintained but I was able to find the main hiking trail that parallels the bike path and the Saddle River. The bike path connects several parks. From there I saw a waterfall, ducks, an egret and juvenile frogs. The park includes a playground, picnic tables, benches, a gazebo and restrooms.
Peaceful, heavily wooded, section of the Saddle River County Park system. Beautiful large oak and other tree species abound. This area is primarily geared for for picnicking as there are many picnic tables. There’s also a small kiddie jungle gym playground. There are bathroom facilities but no ballfields or sports fields. Trout fishing isn’t too bad by the bridge just a few hundred yards down the exit road/path heading south. Lots of squirrels, in fact we always jokingly called this “squirrel city”. The foliage colors in the fall are stunning.
