Nestled in the scenic heart of Olanta, South Carolina, Woods Bay State Park offers a peaceful escape for outdoor enthusiasts and dog lovers alike. Known for its beautiful Carolina Bay, this park is perfect for those looking to enjoy pet-friendly hiking trails, nature walks, and serene picnic spots far from city crowds. Its boardwalk and loop trails provide a unique opportunity for dogs and their owners to explore the diverse wildlife and tranquil landscapes together.
Visitors are reminded to keep dogs on-leash, especially around water areas where wildlife such as alligators may be present. Although the park’s amenities are rustic, including walking paths through woods and scenic boardwalks (currently under refurbishment), Woods Bay State Park promises a quiet day in nature with your canine companion. Don’t forget the bug spray and water, and enjoy the welcoming, relaxed southern vibes just outside Olanta!
This place is absolutely beautiful. Didn’t see any gators, but most of the boardwalk is closed today because of government shutdown.

This is an interesting place for a short stop. We took a walk on the boardwalk and went around the loop which goes around one of the last remaining Carolina Bays.
There is a canoe trail, but we didn’t do that. We saw a few turtles, and several spiders with webs alongside the boardwalk. Do bring bug spray, water and snacks as this park is far from any towns or amenities.

Very beautiful! However the boardwalk had pretty large gaping holes, so you really had to watch your step. After the first portion of the boardwalk you are back on the trail, but it was overgrown in some spots. Unfortunately, almost stepped on a copperhead. Decided it was best to just turn around!

Quiet and very secluded park for a picnic, hiking or fishing. There are walking paths through the woods, although some areas are troubled by roots and caution should be given. A boardwalk meanders over the swamp, but was closed after short distance.
Laura was very informative about the current work in the park and about its current transition. Work is currently underway to refurbish the Ranger’s station/residence and on the boardwalk.
