If you’re looking for one of the best dog-friendly hiking spots in Oakland, California, Knowland Park Open Space is a top choice. This spacious, scenic area offers sweeping views of the East Bay and miles of open trails that are ideal for off-leash fun with your dog. Renowned for its stunning vistas and open landscapes, the park’s pet-friendly trails provide plenty of space for your pup to explore and socialize. It is both wheelchair accessible and family friendly—a great spot for a casual stroll, a vigorous hike, or a dog walker’s adventure.
The park features public restrooms and trailheads perfect for dog walkers or families. Many visitors describe spectacular views at every turn, peaceful hiking paths, and a dog community that is a mix of leash and off-leash users (so always bring a leash just in case). Knowland Park is also praised for its easygoing vibe and open spaces where dogs can truly run free—making it a unique dog park in Oakland, CA. Note that the park can get busy on weekends, and that wildlife such as mountain lions and bobcats has been spotted, so always be vigilant when exploring with your pet.
This is a main causeway for mountain lions, Bobcats and I’m assuming deer based on previous mentions. Came up on 2 fresh kills(Turkey, I believe.) at the trailhead my first visit. There’s a petition to stop the expansion of the Oakland Zoo infringing on one of the last Natural Areas left in the bay area. It’s tragic.
Open trails, amazing views, pleasant surprises around every turn
It has been a long time since I’ve been to the zoo.

This place has been a great find. Most days I only run in to 1 or 2 hikers with or without dogs. It says it’s ok for dogs off leash, but I bring my leash just in case the dogs don’t get along. It’s a mixed crowd of dog owners with leashes and without. The views are spectacular. The open space is awesome for the dogs to run and be free. The weekends can be crowded though. Otherwise, this is the best tolerated off leash spot in the East Bay.
