Baxter Preserve – The Racetrack is a cherished dog park in North Salem, New York, offering open fields, scenic meadows, gentle hiking trails, and vibrant natural beauty for both dogs and their owners. With its accessible terrain, well-maintained paths, picturesque ponds, and tranquil streams, the preserve is a favorite for pet-friendly families who love hiking or simply strolling with their canine companions.
This unique destination is ideal for dog-friendly hiking and relaxing afternoons, featuring seating areas like benches and a community “lost and found” spot at the entrance. Although there is no dedicated fenced dog area, dogs are allowed off-leash if under voice control, making it a popular spot to let pups explore responsibly. Parking is available at the entrance, but can be limited on busy days. The preserve’s lush landscape, local wildlife sightings, and peaceful environment make it a hidden gem for dog lovers in Westchester County.
A great place for a gentle hike. Very little elevation change. Well kept paths. Beware horse manure.
I almost didn’t want to post about this place because it’s such a hidden gem, but it’s the best place to walk your dog within 30 miles.
Well maintained, easy to walk trails. Very popular with families w kids and dogs. Fishing accessible from the south end of the pond.
Such a special spot to hike with your dog and family. Open fields, expanses of green and meadows and ponds, all set behind the homes of multimillionaires. It feels like a never-ending sprawl of beauty, where any time of day, any season, is sensational. The best hike in Westchester.
5 stars!!!!
It pains me to post a positive review of one of my favorite gems of Northern Westchester. The reason is simple, I don’t want anymore people to find it.
The preserve is a beautiful spot anytime of year. It is home to many sounds of nature, fresh air, eclectic art (viewable from the pathways), and an abundance of horse droppings. Dogs love it too, but remember your leash. Don’t be one of those people who thinks rules don’t apply to you or your well trained angel of a dog. Just enjoy it and be respectful of everyone and every living thing around you.
Parking can be limited on some days.
