John Hutto Park offers pet owners and their furry companions a spacious retreat along the river in Newton, Alabama. Although the main entrance might not immediately impress, venture further back to discover expansive open areas perfect for outdoor activities, dog-friendly hiking, and riverside fun. The park is popular for its family-friendly vibe, direct river access, and beautiful woodland trails, making it a hidden gem for those seeking pet-friendly trails and plenty of open space.
The park features working but basic restrooms (bring your own toilet paper), ample picnic tables, and a large boat ramp ideal for water adventures. Unique highlights include access to a rolling creek with spots to splash or swim, scenic walking trails, and the historic old bridge—providing both relaxing and adventurous experiences for leashed dogs and their humans. With room to explore and rarely crowded areas, it’s a great choice for both active pups and families in the Newton area.
Park is ok, not super clean and very little organization. There’s nice picnic tables but everything is unmarked, so it’s easy to get confused. Has an ok view of the river.
My family loves this place. There’s rarely anyone else when we go and plenty of room to explore! The beautiful rolling creek offers a great okace to either kick your shoes off and play or take a dip in the deeper areas!
Good clean place to launch our Kayaks we paddled up river and then floated back down to the boat ramp, we did have to walk in a couple places
We only checked out the “off the beaten path” areas. The creek was beautiful but very slippery. The trails through the woods were gorgeous. And the old bridge was super cool. Skeeto’s Hole (from 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey) was an interesting find.
The front of this park is very deceiving because it’s a little run down, there are working (but dirty) restrooms, but you will have to bring your own toilet paper.
However if you drive a little bit back there is a large park with plenty of space for walking, picnicking, frisby, or any outdoor sport really. There is also a large boat ramp that gives you direct access to the river.
This is a great little park for the family with direct access to the river.
