Located at the intersection of South 13th Street and 18th Avenue, West Side Park is a community-centric urban park in Newark, New Jersey. While not an official dog park, dogs are allowed, making it an accessible option for dog owners searching for pet-friendly parks in Newark. The park offers paved walking and jogging paths, a playground, sports fields, and open green space suitable for dog walks or light exercise alongside your dog.
Visitors appreciate the park for its family-friendly environment, with amenities like public restrooms, basketball and baseball facilities, and a dedicated playground. The park is wheelchair accessible and includes paved walkways, making it inclusive for all visitors. While the park’s play areas, paths, and overall aesthetic are highlights, some reviews mention that occasional trash and busy periods—especially during local sporting events—can detract from the experience. Still, West Side Park is a valuable outdoor destination for dog walking, pet-friendly exercise, and relaxation in Newark.
I took off one star for all the trash on the ground in the childrens play area. But other than that my son had fun and I felt safe
It was very cute, the city should clean up all the garbage. If there was no garbage it would be a 5 star rating. Small playground, perfect for all ages.
Such a beautiful park but I would not recommend taking your children here especially if you are not from the area … Teenagers are always smoking while the children are playing , always fighting (not a day where I went and I didn’t see a fight or a fight about to happen , stolen cars driving by while police across the street do nothing & shootings happening randomly in every area around the park !! I hate that I can’t take my children to enjoy themselves at such a beautiful park …
The track is nice and alllows you to get a good workout, but it seems that the track is now consumed by Latino soccer teams that take over the whole field. They have baby strollers, beer bottles and food truck lines all over the place so you cant use the track at all.
I like to go here for a walk just to clear my head sometimes ..there’s a lot of areas to walk, run or exercise in general. In fact many soccer games and football games happen daily …makes for good entertainment when I’m taking a stroll. My only complaint is that some of the pavers are being completely lifted up my the roots of trees so I’d love to see that taken care of at some point.
