While smaller than the popular Hampton Beaches, this dog-friendly spot in New Castle, New Hampshire, offers visitors tranquil surroundings, rocky outcrops for sitting, and views of two iconic lighthouses. It’s a wonderful destination for families, dog owners, or anyone seeking a relaxing day by the sea.

The primary access point to the beach is through the Great Island Common, a local park open to the public with a playground for children and restroom facilities. Great Island Commons on New Castle is a great, town park open to the public. Located at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor, you can see two lighthouses and enjoy watching ships of all sizes going in and out. If you’re lucky, you could see a nuclear submarine coming or going into the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Smaller than the Hampton 🏖️ Beaches, especially during high tide 🌊, it still is very scenic with views of two lighthouses and all types of sailing craft that pass by. Can get a little crowded.
Primary access is through Great Island 🏝️ Common, though, there is a small street that ends at the beach ⛱️. Parking 🅿️ is limited to residents with parking stickers.
Bring bug 🐛 repellent. I have been bitten a few times. Large amounts of seaweed attract the little buggers!
The recent fireworks 🎇 show was interesting, but, very short. Even the Thomas Leighton showed up to party 🎉!
I recommend a visit if you visit Great Island Common.

We got lucky with beautiful spring weather entire week and thought to check out the New Castle Beach on our way back from Portsmouth NH. This beach is a peaceful, scenic spot, perfect for families and just outside of Portsmouth. offers beautiful ocean views, so many rocks to sit on, and a relaxing vibe that’s less crowded than nearby Hampton beach.

It’s not a big sandy beach, so it’s suited for relaxing, reading, or enjoying a picnic with a view. If you’re looking for tranquility and natural beauty, this beach is awesome 😎
