Located in the scenic hills of Brown County, Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill is a fantastic spot for dog owners looking for pet-friendly trails near Nashville, Indiana. Known for its rugged, hilly terrain and beautiful wooded ravines, this nature preserve offers around 5–6.5 miles of well-maintained hiking trails. Dog owners can enjoy extended hikes through pine groves and creek valleys, making it an ideal destination for dogs that love exploring nature alongside their owners.
While the preserve excels as a dog-friendly hiking area, there are no dedicated fenced dog park areas or dog-specific amenities such as water fountains or waste stations. The trails are not wheelchair accessible and do not feature paved paths, seating areas, or covered shelters. However, families will appreciate that the trails are kid-friendly and offer a peaceful experience, especially if you venture out during less busy hours. Remember to bring bug spray in spring and summer when ticks are common, and keep your dog leashed at all times to respect wildlife and other park users.
On recommendation of our hostess we stopped at this local trail. It was a muggy morning, so we stayed on the main side trail instead of the narrow weedy one. There was not much to see just deep ravine full of downed trees and what may have been a tiny creek. Only after half mile or so we turned back. After that we drove a bit further down the road to the much nicer and very well maintained county park. But we did have to pay NULL but it was worth it.
We had a wonderful hike. Very senic.
Wanted to to do a short loop since I’m a little out of shape😉🤪Doing a reset with a daily hike (
This is approximately 5-6.5 miles of family-friendly trails (if you walk every single trail and road within the Trust), and they are fairly straightforward Brown County hiking. Some moderate ups and downs in typical BC ravines. The trails are maintained well by the Sycamore Land Trust. Typically, there are other hikers or trail runners, but one can go good distances without encountering anyone else. In the spring and early summer, there are many ticks, so bug spray is necessary. Great place to spend a few hours.
Rugged, hilly and beautiful. A great place to hike. North loop goes through a gorgeous creek valley. South loop has more elevation change and is longer. The pine grove near the end of the South loop is a great place for a break! North loop ends with a hefty climb up out of the valley. Highly recommended.
