Muttontown Preserve offers dog owners and nature lovers a scenic escape with a variety of pet-friendly hiking trails. Located in Muttontown, New York, this preserve features extensive networks of wooded paths, open meadows, and historic estates. The preserve is especially known for its natural beauty, wildlife sightings, and tranquil setting, making it the ideal destination for those seeking dog-friendly hiking adventures in Nassau County.
Ample parking is available at the Bill Paterson Nature Center, offering easy access to maps and restrooms. While the trails are not fenced and leashes are required, dogs are welcome to explore the diverse landscapes, including grassy hills, swampy areas, and even glimpses of local wildlife. Be sure to bring water for you and your pet, as amenities for dogs are limited. Its ok, a little confusing if your not from around the area, had to ask for directions. Went to the Mansion &Garden first but by accident…then was directed to the right place. There’s sufficient parking, and a little cabin, you’ll find bathrooms in there and an info area. The trails start there…the trails, have trails so you might get confused. You’ll know your on the trail if you see posts (like 6a, 2b stuff like that). Very muddy paths, lil swampy area, a hilly, grassy area, large area. Eventually if you venture off the path you’ll end up on the horse ranch.. Saw some beavers too. Which was cool. Adventure took about an hour, overall its ok.
Very beautiful old nature preserve in a nice area. It’s well maintained and mowed in many areas along the trails. The ruins are limited and full of graffiti from what I’ve found. There are several different areas of the preserve and they have different traits. You can easily get lost here if you’re not careful or experienced bring a drink with you.
Beautiful preserve with variety of landscapes from forests to meadows to old estates. My preference to park is at Bill Paterson nature center that provides access to trails, restrooms and printed maps. Good way to navigate preserve is AllTrails app that has major trails captured. Otherwise, it might be confusing since only few major trails have trail markings. Chelsey mansion is technically part of preserve and its grounds are open for public access, however no trails start from this location. Alternative parking for preserve is equestrian center entrance on Jericho Oyster Bay Rd. This entrance is also shortest distance to former Knollwood Estate remnants aka King Zog’s ruins.
Very nice preserve. Great trails, wildlife, nature, etc.
I came here on a nice Monday afternoon in January.
🦋Went to the Mansion & Garden as well. Highly recommend this if your in the area.
🦋There’s sufficient parking and a little cabin, you’ll find bathrooms in there and an info area. But when I went… it was closed… it wasn’t even 3 pm…
The trails start where the cabin is.. there’s many trails, so choose which path you want to go in.
You’ll know you’re on the trail if you see posts such as 6a, 2b, etc. There’s a little swampy area, a hilly, grassy area, and so on.
🦋there’s a horse ranch as well.
Overall, I definitely recommend it for a nice hike and an adventure in the woods.
Some of the trails are well maintained, but the trails’ have a lot of fork roads; you need a map. You may get the map behind the house. After you finish, you can drive the car to the Chelsea Mason to walk around, or you can use the trails to walk to the Mason.
