Located in the scenic forests of Mt Solon, North River Campground offers affordable, primitive camping with direct access to a beautiful river and forest trails. This budget-friendly destination is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts seeking pet-friendly trails and dog-friendly hiking experiences in Virginia. The tranquil setting, shady trees by the creek, and the natural surroundings make this spot a great choice for both relaxation and adventure with your furry friend.
Campers appreciate the campground’s well-maintained sites, creek access, and close proximity to trails—ideal for leashed walks with dogs. The area is inviting, with polite campers, plenty of shade, and opportunities for wildlife watching. While amenities are basic (pit/vault toilets, no showers or running water), the campground is loved for its simplicity, peace, and budget-friendly $5/night fee. Please remember to bring $5 bills for the self-service payment box and keep your pets leashed as required by Virginia law.
My very first camping trip I believe I was three years old so was my first bear sighting. My words were it sure has a pretty fur coat lol although I haven’t been there for sometime all the way up through until my mid 20s. I was there all the time wonderful memories riding the Dirtbike across the Mountain tops wonderful friendships gone by, but memories not forgotten! RIP Guy Parrish..

Beautiful well keeped forest and park and campground! The creek wraps around the sites and close trails. We liked the campground enough that we stayed again on our home from NC. Primitive camping, vault toilets. Some reviews state that the sites are close, I suppose maybe, but everyone was polite. NULL. Maybe only one or two sites if towing a larger RV. Cheers! Gretchen (PA)

Nice cheap place to camp. Personally I would have liked some more space between the camp sites and more trees. But for NULL it’s pretty good. There is a pit toilet here also. It’s first come first served, so it could be full on nice weekends. Also, bring NULL bills. Paying is a self service drop box type thing.

As minimal as my wife will accept 🙂 – that is – there are pit toilets – that’s it. No shower. No running water – except that all the camp sites are right next to the river, so there is plenty of running water. And for NULL a night, that is pretty sweet.
