🐾 How to Handle Aggressive Dogs at the Dog Park – Real Advice from Dog Owners
Visiting the dog park can be a joyful activity for both you and your furry friend—but aggressive encounters can quickly […]
Located along the scenic Uncompahgre Riverway Trail, the Old Montrose Dog Park offers dog owners a less crowded, off-leash area for their pets to play. This dog park in Montrose, Colorado, is perfect if you want to avoid the crowds that gather at the newer parks near the soccer fields. Its solid perimeter fencing and two designated sections for large and small dogs make it a practical option for a variety of dog sizes and temperaments. Note that the gates on the small dog side may not close completely, so attentive supervision is recommended for small or sneaky dogs.
Pet parents will find the basics they need: grassy open spaces, benches, and a covered seating area to escape the sun, although there are no trees for extra shade. With rarely any others around, it’s especially suitable for dogs that prefer space or struggle with socialization. While the park is appreciated for its peace and large grassy area, visitors are encouraged to clean up after their pets to keep the space inviting for everyone.

This off leash dog park is still accessible (as of January 2020) although the new dog parks near the soccer fields are much more popular. This is a great alternative if you want to keep your pup away from other dogs, as there are rarely any others here nowadays. The main perimeter fences are still solid. The gates are not in the best shape, and undisciplined or small pets may be able to get out, if left unattended. My little guy does fine off leash, with the occasional whistle or verbal correction to call him back to me. At the entrance, the interior gate to the larger park closes adequately. Neither gate on the smaller park closes completely, so pet parents, you decide (based on your dog’s temperament) if this is the best space for your pet to be off leash. We prefer the new parks up near Main, but we will visit here when we need time away from the other dogs.
