Moonville Rail Trail is a scenic location ideal for hiking and biking, with a trail that is mostly flat and wide. It is family-friendly and suitable for kids, allowing dogs on the trail. However, the trail maintenance might be inconsistent, with some areas obstructed by branches and leaves. There is limited cell service, and parking is available at trailheads like the Moonville Tunnel parking lot.

Wide, well maintained trail that is mostly flat

This trail seemed very promising, so we too the 3 1/2 hour drive with family and bikes with three cars and met in Zaleski, Ohio at the trailhead on an early October morning. It was a beautiful day for a bike ride, but the trail was covered in branches and leaves and wasn’t too well maintained. We rode to the schoolhouse, about three miles, and then discovered that the trail from there was blockaded. Sadly, there were no signs at the beginning nor along the trail. In the meantime, due to the unkempt nature of the trail, one of us got a flat tire and I had to drive to the school house to bail out the group in two trips. Staff at the schoolhouse were very friendly. To make things worse, there is no cell service. As the group driver, I was waiting at the Moonville Tunnel parking lot, about 6 miles in, with no idea about all of the problems. One of the ladies at the schoolhouse drove my wife there to meet me so we could bail them out. Despite all of this, we did our best to make it good by driving the cars to the Moonville Tunnel and one other tunnel ( I will rate separately).
