Buttermilk Falls is a beautiful natural area located just off the road in Long Lake, NY, making it an easily accessible spot for pet owners seeking dog-friendly hiking or a relaxing outdoor experience with their canine companions. This local favorite offers picturesque views of the falls along the Raquette River, shaded spots to relax, and informal picnic areas where visitors can unwind with family and pets. While not a traditional dog park, its open, accessible terrain and inviting atmosphere are perfect for leashed dog walks and nature outings.
The park area features a small parking lot as well as roadside parking, a picnic table for enjoying meals, and plenty of natural rock seating. Dog owners will appreciate the abundance of shade provided by the surrounding trees and the refreshing environment near the water. While there are no formal fenced areas, agility equipment, or designated small/large dog zones, the site’s simple amenities—such as an outhouse and accessible approach—make it a pet-friendly destination in the Adirondacks.

A must see if you are in the area

This is not a high waterfall, but is beautiful nonetheless, and is easy to get to. The water was still rushing when we went in late August, due to the volume of summer rain this year. There is a small parking area and parking available along the side of the road, and an easy walk to the falls. Picnic table there, but lots of places where you can simply sit on the rocks and have a picnic as well.
There is an outhouse at the site, but no formal bathrooms
