Get a Larimer County parking pass before you go. Trailhead restrooms we clean. There was plenty of parking and it was not crowded on a weekend. Next time we will come back in the morning or in the spring or fall to avoid the heat. There is no shade. Eagles Nest Open Space is beautiful and you can see the North Fork tributary of the Coach La Poudre River.
The 3-bar section is nice too, but the best part of the hike is at the river and then the OT Loop. It was snowy today, so grey and overcast, but I still loved it (and had the place completely to myself!). I suggest doing the OT loop counter clockwise so you can really enjoy the great view as you come back down toward the river. I’d like to re-visit this hike in late May or early June. Eagle’s Rest Rock looks best as you turn back north from the far south end of the OT loop. No big wildlife today, but I saw seven mountain bluebirds, which were especially stunning against the snow. Wonderful hike! The weather was perfect and this was our first time here. We hiked around 3mi or so and the fresh air and beautiful views were needed. Recommend highly.
Very pretty area to hike or trail run! Horse and dog friendly it appears. Clean and well-kept restroom at trailhead, plenty of parking. Two loops to choose from, I recommend combining them if you have the time. Also recommend doing this early or late in the day during the hot months of the year due to zero shade until you get to the bridge crossing. Bring extra water to be safe. I agree with the moderate rating due to lots of up and downs. I was the only one there the whole time when I went at dawn today. Well worth the time to try it out!
Really nice trail in Eagle’s Nest Open Space. It’s a loop trail, with very easy terrain. The trail is smooth, open, and relatively flat. It’s used by hikers, dog walkers, and horses. Be aware of horse droppings on the trail. The parking lot has access to bathrooms as well. Very nice views of the front range.
