Located in the heart of Jamaica, NY, Rufus King Park Playground offers a welcoming green space for families, kids, and dog owners alike. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, recent renovations have transformed the park into a cleaner, safer place where both people and pets can unwind. While not a dedicated dog park, the park’s open, grassy areas are great for leashed walks, and the shady spots make it a comfortable destination year-round. With a playground, basketball and handball courts, and proximity to local landmarks like the Rufus King Manor museum, there’s something for everyone in your pack.
This pet-friendly park is especially suited for those looking for dog-friendly trails and a place to socialize, although it’s important to keep dogs leashed as there’s no fenced or off-leash area. Families will also appreciate the kid-centric amenities like summer sprinklers and playground equipment. Be aware that the park can become crowded and rowdy in the summer and is best avoided after dark. Restrooms are available but may lack supplies, so plan ahead for your visit.

This is a lovely local park that had fallen to assault of urban blight. In the last decade, local families had given way to homeless, drug abusers and frightening thugs who had made the park their own private “Tortuga” in the heart of Jamaica. In the last few years however, the neighborhood has been making a comeback, and the park recently underwent a complete renovation. Broken glass, hypodermic needles and used condoms , once the norm, have been cleared away to make room for families strolling with baby carriages and kids and teens playing soccer in the grass. Local workers can be seen walking and jogging around the park on their lunch hour. Older folks can now spend pleasant afternoons in the park when the weather is welcoming.
The park was built around the former home of Rufus King, described as a lawyer, statesman and gentleman farmer 1755-1827. The manor itself is maintained as a museum and it is said “the library is the most interesting room in the manor”. If you find yourself in the area, the park and manor are worthy of a visit, but don’t go at night. The museum is closed and the park while accessible, is also closed at dusk.
