Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve offers some of the most scenic hiking experiences in Jackson, Ohio, making it a top destination for pet owners seeking dog-friendly trails. The preserve features well-maintained hiking paths, lush natural features, striking sandstone formations, and bodies of water. While it is primarily a nature preserve, many visitors enjoy bringing their leashed dogs along to explore the diverse and picturesque trails together.
The area is known for its easy to moderate hiking loops, making it suitable for families with children as well as dog owners looking for a peaceful day out with their furry friends. The accessible parking lot and boardwalks make it more convenient for visitors of varying abilities. While some loops may close seasonally, there are always beautiful sections to discover, including floodplain forests and vibrant wildflower displays in spring. Be mindful of natural risks like drop-offs; always supervise young children and dogs closely.
Easy to moderate difficulty. Well maintained trails. Pretty rock formations and bodies of water.
A stunning area with tons of beautiful natural features. We really enjoyed this easy 2 mile loop on the long trail.
One of my favorite places to go hiking. Trails are great and well maintained
So pretty! Went on all the trails in early march, planning on coming back in the summer, too! Trails where we’ll maintained. I’m young, so I had no problem hiking, but there were a few spots others might not like. If you bring small kids, make sure you keep an eye on them. There are some big drop offs.
This is an amazing nature preserve. I was disappointed that the Pine Ridge and Lake View Trail loops were closed (until December 2023). The Calico Bush Trail had beautiful sandstone formations and lush green Hemlock trees. In contrast, the Salt Long trail takes you through a flood plain forest where Virginia Bluebells were blooming. The boardwalk area, stairs, and bridges made the hiking path easy to navigate. In total, we hiked about 3.2 miles. In the future, we would love to return and hike the ridge trails that were closed.
