FAQ for Muliwai Trail in Honokaa Hawaii:
Was fortunate enough to be able to hike the Mulawai trail to Waimanu Valley to camp for a few nights. Pack light it’s quite the hike out with a lot of elevation in the heat. There are several (12-13) creek gulches that follow the cliff side north to Waimanu Valley. Any previous rainfall can make the trail very slick. Bring lots of water if you plan to hike during the heat of the day.
Guide from Waipio Valley bus tour said that it is possible to hike , you just need permit for hike.I highly recommend the bus tour. You must have this tour. It was fantastic.
Beautiful views from the Waipio lookout, but you *cannot* get to this trail from the Waipio lookout! Non-residents are not allowed to drive into or hike down from the lookout point, and this is enforced by an on-site security guard.
I hiked to Waimanu Valley in this trail years ago. Beautiful hike. Lots of up and down, including the switchbacks up from Waipio Valley and down into Waimanu Valley, and back. Against warnings I decided to do the out and back in a day. I started a little after sunrise and got back to the Waipio overlook a little before sunset. That last stretch up the road out of Waipio was rough, taking many breaks. I took everything needed just in case I had to stay the night out, minus a shelter.I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone but I felt strongly to do it so I answered the call. A great last day of my Big Island visit. So memorable!!
This hike is Gnarly. The trail is straight up the whole way. Very rocky and very hot. This trail should only be explored by experienced hikers and with lots and lots of water. This side does have very beautiful views of the valley
