Visiting the dog park can be a joyful activity for both you and your furry friend—but aggressive encounters can quickly […]
Herndon Caboose Park is a charming and compact destination located in the heart of downtown Herndon, Virginia. Known for its signature 1949 caboose, the park offers a unique blend of local history and recreational space. While not a traditional dog park, it’s a dog-friendly green area where pets on leash are welcome alongside children and families enjoying the preserved caboose, shaded benches, and proximity to the W&OD Trail—one of Northern Virginia’s popular pet-friendly trails.
This park is ideal if you’re looking for a casual meetup before a hike, a scenic rest stop while cycling, or a relaxing spot to enjoy ice cream from the Dairy Queen across the street. Notably, the park is wheelchair accessible, includes shaded benches for owners, and has a friendly, community-centered vibe. Whether you have a canine companion or energetic kids, Herndon Caboose Park offers a small slice of Herndon’s charming character and outdoor hospitality.
The Caboose Park is a tiny area with benches, shade trees, and a full-sized caboose right next to the Herndon Municipal Building. Calling it a park is a bit of a stretch, but it’s still a cool spot. It’s a great place to bring kids to let them climb around on the caboose and to eat your ice cream from the Dairy Queen across the street. I often see cyclists taking a rest here as the W&OD trail is adjacent to the park. Neat piece of history in downtown Herndon.
Very nice place to visit with your toddler or as in my case, my 5 year old who was delighted to see the original caboose preserved right off the trail.
Get place to start a walk or ride. Can get crowded at peak times. Definitely stay to your right as much as possible. Bikes can be passing at high speeds.
If you have kids into trains, take them here! It’s a 1949 caboose with a little museum inside. When it’s closed, you can still climb on it. My daughter loves pretending to drive it! Nearby are many family-friendly restaurants.
Spent day in this neighborhood with my toddler and absolutely loved it. Best place for the people who love to ride bikes. Nuce trails and very friendly atmosphere ☀️ My toddler also loved long walks to the “parke” ❣️
