🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

Located in Hampton, Sandy Bottom Nature Park offers a popular dog park perfect for local pet owners and visitors looking for dog-friendly activities. With a large, fenced-in area where dogs can run off-leash, this park provides a safe and spacious spot for energetic pups. Dog waste bags and clean-up stations are conveniently available at both ends of the dog area, making it easy for owners to keep the space clean and enjoyable for everyone.
The park connects to paved nature trails, giving pet owners access to scenic walks and additional exercise opportunities for themselves and their dogs. While there isn’t a divider for small versus large dogs and some gaps beneath the fence may be unsuitable for very small breeds, the open space makes it a favorite for most dogs. With easy-access parking and the ambiance of Hampton’s beautiful outdoors, Sandy Bottom is a fantastic spot for dog-friendly hiking, play, and relaxation.
We joined the Homeschoolers of Newport News, VA for the Wildlife of Virginia interactive lesson at Sandy Bottom Nature Park, and it was such a great experience! The program was hands-on, educational, and fun for both kids and adults.
The Rangers did a fantastic job keeping everyone engaged while teaching about local wildlife. The kids got to see and touch real examples like a boxing turtle shell, deer antlers, snake molting, and even a live snake (though my son and I both passed on that one! 🤣).
We all learned something new and left with a deeper appreciation for the animals around us. Highly recommend this park and their educational programs or just a walk to get away from the world for just a little bit.
A true gem in our city!

Definitely recommend, such a relaxing nature walk, my daughter and I walked a few trails, walked on a pier and visited the garden!

After a busy week in real estate, I decided to take a hike in nature at Sandy Bottom. I enjoyed every second of it. The trails were easy to follow. I saw some wildlife like birds and turtles. I visited the nature center. I highly recommend and will be back.

We went to Sandy Bottom for an event. Sandy Bottom is a very unique park, albeit small. There is still a lot of nature to enjoy! I loved the nature center, where you can look at different native animals and learn more about them. They are well taken care of and in appropriate sized enclosures.
You have to reserve a pavilion (they call them ‘courtyards’) to use them. Overall, it is a nice area but fairly crowded and small

First visit to this park. We had a family weekend and it was nice. The location had a trail but you had to be careful because there are snakes. They have a little aquarium where you can see different types of snakes and other things. Make sure you have bug spray when outdoors. They also have paddle boats for rent. There was park police present and it was pleasant for the most part. I would recommend this park.
